Nordstrom promotes supply chain executive amidst ongoing concerns about inventory losses

Nordstrom Bumps Up Alexis DePree to COO

In a move to bolster its leadership, Nordstrom announced on Friday that it has promoted Alexis DePree to the position of chief operating officer. DePree, who arrived at Nordstrom four years ago as the executive vice president and chief supply chain officer, brings a wealth of experience from her stints at Amazon and Target.

Her new role will see her continuing to support supply chain operations, transportation, inventory operations, enterprise operations, and store operations. However, the elevation to the top position comes at a crucial time, as the department store grapples with theft issues in its transportation network and supply chain, which led to a 225 basis-point hit to gross margins.

Analysts, led by Evercore ISI's Michael Binetti, have flagged this issue, warning that there's "little room for error on margins" and that the shrink-related risk could persist. In response, Nordstrom stressed that DePree has orchestrated "significant progress" in various areas, such as strengthening the supply chain network, dramatically improving speed to customer, and reducing costs.

Moving forward, DePree's priorities will include implementing Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and enhancing operational efficiency and consistency. The use of RFID technology will not only allow Nordstrom to maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory levels but also improve collaboration with suppliers and streamline the inventory process, reducing errors and chargebacks.

Moreover, by using RFID, suppliers can improve shipping accuracy, reduce errors, and enhance their overall supply chain efficiency. This strategic move is aimed at achieving consistent inventory management, reducing operational inefficiencies, and potentially improving customer satisfaction by ensuring faster and more accurate operations.

In a nutshell, Alexis DePree's leadership is vital as Nordstrom endeavors to streamline its operations, maintain real-time inventory visibility, and continue to provide a seamless shopping experience for its customers.
