Nordhorn Wins 'Future Prize Climate Communal' for Cycling Innovations
Nordhorn has been praised for its innovative approach to promoting cycling as a primary mode of transport. The city's project, which aims to make cycling easier and more appealing, has won the 'Future Prize Climate Communal 2018'.
The jury was particularly impressed by Nordhorn's forward-thinking approach to climate-friendly mobility. The city has renovated large parts of its cycle path, widened them where possible, and added a second lane where widening wasn't feasible. This has created more space on heavily used routes, making cycling more comfortable and safer.
At key intersections like Heseper Weg and Frensdorferhaar, the right-of-way regulation has been changed to favor cyclists. These improvements are part of a larger project to expand 'comfort bike paths' along the Nordhorn-Almelo and connecting canals, stretching from the Dutch border to the Ems-Vechte Canal. The city's mayor has announced that the 5,000 euro prize money will be used to fund future cycling projects.
Nordhorn's commitment to cycling infrastructure has been recognized with the prestigious 'Future Prize Climate Communal 2018'. The city's efforts to promote cycling as a sustainable and convenient mode of transport are expected to continue, with the prize money earmarked for further climate change projects.
