Newly Unveiled: Sophisticated Paint, Rotoscoping, and Tracking Tools by Boris FX for Enhanced Video Editing

In a groundbreaking move, Boris FX has unveiled the latest versions of their flagship visual effects (VFX) software, Silhouette 2023 and Mocha Pro 2023. These updates promise to streamline VFX workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and enhance productivity for artists across the industry.

The standout feature in Silhouette 2023 is the introduction of the Stability node, which integrates Stable Diffusion AI models directly into the software. This innovation allows visual effects artists to generate or enhance matte and paint elements using AI, significantly speeding up rotoscoping and paint workflows by automating complex tasks like edge refinement and object isolation [1].

Mocha Pro 2023, while not detailing individual features, is expected to focus on improving planar tracking precision, roto and masking tools, and integration with machine learning or AI-assisted modules. These enhancements are designed to streamline tracking-based workflows, reduce manual corrections, and accelerate matchmoving and roto tasks [1].

The new features in Silhouette 2023 also include a powerful expression system that enables artists to create complex animations and link parameters, perform math functions, and use variables without having to write code. Other additions include the Remove Module, which creates a single layer to remove unwanted moving objects on locked or static shots, and the Insert Module, which offers an improved ROI (region of interest) crop for easier manipulation of PowerMesh and Grid warps on organic moving objects [1].

In addition to these updates, Silhouette 2023 offers the Primatte node, giving users access to Academy Award-nominated chromakeying technology. It also includes the UltraGrain node, which accurately applies photorealistic film grain and camera noise to images based on popular film stocks and contemporary digital cameras, and the Denoiser ML node, which uses sophisticated machine learning techniques to eliminate unwanted noise from images while preserving critical features [1].

The new releases are available as a plugin to popular video software platforms or as a standalone application. They are also accessible with monthly/annual subscriptions, upgrade & support plans, and permanent licenses [1].

Mocha Pro is available under similar pricing options, including monthly/annual subscriptions, upgrade & support plans, and permanent licenses. Compositors can now generate track data nodes directly inside Foundry Nuke's node interface in Silhouette 2023, with the option for linked or baked nodes [1].

Silhouette and Mocha Pro customers on active subscriptions or upgrade & support plans will receive the corresponding 2023 product release as a complimentary update [1]. The companies have also made branding toolkits available for promotional purposes [1].

VFX artist and trainer, Katie Morris of KMFX, has praised Silhouette 2023, stating that it continues to excel in roto, paint, and tracking, and that the new features are raising the bar even higher [1].

These updates are expected to revolutionise VFX workflows by automating traditionally tedious or highly manual steps using AI and machine learning, increasing the speed and accuracy of rotoscoping, paint, retiming, and tracking tasks, reducing user fatigue and time-consuming frame-by-frame operations, and integrating better with contemporary VFX pipelines [1][5].
