New PSU Testing Rig Simulates Real-World Conditions for Comprehensive Evaluations
A comprehensive power supply unit (PSU) evaluation setup has been established, combining advanced electrical testing equipment and environmental measurement tools. This rig simulates real-world conditions to assess PSU performance, stability, and efficiency.
At the core of this setup is a custom-built hot box that mimics in-case thermal conditions. This enables efficiency and stability testing under realistic heat loads.
Two high-end oscilloscopes, a Hantek DSO4102S with 100 MHz bandwidth and a Rigol DS5042M with 40 MHz, are employed for ripple and noise testing. Thermal performance is meticulously tracked using UNI-T UT-325 digital thermometers with four probes, providing detailed temperature mapping.
For comprehensive PSU evaluations, modular precision test systems like Tektronix's MP5000 series are used. These combine programmable power supply units (PSUs) and source measure units (SMUs) in a scalable mainframe, ensuring precise electrical performance testing. Automated test setups integrate these electrical tests with sensor-equipped chambers or test rigs, allowing simultaneous monitoring of power, temperature, and acoustic emissions.
To draw up to 2400 W from the +12 V rails, two Maynuo M9714 (1200 W) and two Maynuo M9711 (150 W) programmable DC loads are utilized. An Extech HD600 sound level meter measures acoustic output, while a laser tachometer records fan speed. Efficiency is tested from 5% to 100% load, exceeding standard certification points to reflect modern idle power behavior.
The setup includes programmable electronic loads, precision oscilloscopes, power analyzers, thermal/acoustic instrumentation, and custom fixtures. An Extech 380803 power analyzer monitors input power, accounting for harmonic distortion.
This PSU evaluation setup adheres to Intel's ATX Design Guide and Generalized Test Protocol, ensuring standardized methodology. By simulating real-world conditions and comprehensive testing, this rig provides thorough performance characterization, ensuring reliable and efficient PSU operation.
