The MG S5 EV: An Affordable and Spacious Electric SUV

New MG S5 Electric SUV Offers Low Fuel Consumption and Ample Interior Space

Get ready to upgrade your ride with the MG S5 EV, a budget-friendly electric SUV that boasts economical consumption and plenty of room. Although it's not the cheapest option on the market, it does pack a punch with a competitive charging speed and an extensive range.

Despite being a Chinese brand, MG has made significant strides in Germany, becoming the most successful Chinese automaker in the country, selling nearly 21,000 cars last year. The MG S5 EV is just one of their offerings that has gained popularity due to its station wagons, small, and compact SUVs.

Economy sans Flooding

While Chinese brands might be flooding the market with shorter model cycles and updates, the arrival of the S5 EV shows that they're taking their time to perfect their vehicles. Built on the same technical basis as the MG4 and Cyberster, this SUV boasts improved charging speed, range, and user-friendliness, all while presenting a more mature and less homemade appearance.

Competing with the VW ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, BYD Atto 3, and Ford Explorer, the MG S5 EV fits comfortably within the same price range. However, the base model starts at a slightly higher price point than some competitors, with a 47 kWh battery and a range of 340 kilometers, priced at €38,000. The long-range version, which comes equipped with a 62 kWh battery and offers a range of 480 kilometers, sets you back €43,000.

Better Charging, More Mileage

The base model comes with a 125 kW electric motor and can charge at up to 120 kW DC. However, its maximum charging speed at public chargers is a disappointing 3.7 kW. The long-range variant, on the other hand, delivers a powerful 170 kW electric motor and can charge at up to 140 kW DC, providing a noticeable boost in performance. It's also worth mentioning that the long-range model comes equipped with navigation that considers charging stops and traffic jams during route planning, a feature only available in the most expensive trim of the base model.

Space Aplenty

Step inside the MG S5 EV, and you'll find a generous amount of space in the rear compartment, making it suitable for three child seats. The trunk following the tailgate is roomy enough for everyday family use, and it opens wide, swings open effortlessly. Unfortunately, there's no frunk, so any need for additional storage space will have to be accommodated within the trunk.

The cockpit features a wide touchscreen that responds quickly and is easy to use. The layout is well-thought-out and sensibly organized, although activating driving modes or managing brake regeneration settings requires navigating through submenus.

In summary, the MG S5 EV offers a competitive charging speed, extensive range, and ample interior space within its class. Priced affordably and offering comparable performance to other small electric SUVs like the VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq, it provides a worthwhile alternative to some of its competitors without breaking the bank.
