New Video Codec AV2 Set to Revolutionize Video Streaming

The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) has announced the upcoming release of their latest video codec, AV2, by the end of 2025. This exciting development is expected to significantly impact the world of video streaming, with potential applications for streaming services like Netflix as early as next year.

AV2 is anticipated to provide a step-up from its predecessor, AV1, in terms of compression performance. In fact, AOMedia claims that AV2 offers "significantly better compression performance than AV1." This improvement could lead to higher quality video and/or lower data demands for video streaming.

AV1 was previously lauded for being 30% more efficient than older formats like VP9 and HEVC. The new AV2 is expected to build upon these efficiencies, offering potential benefits such as smoother streams for those on weaker connections, with the potential for less buffering or a faster transition to higher resolution streams.

The picture performance of video streams depends on the amount of data that needs to be transmitted and the compression needed to make that happen. By improving compression efficiency, AV2 could help reduce the impact of data loss on the quality of the streamed video.

AV2 also offers enhanced support for AR/VR applications, split-screen delivery of multiple programs, improved handling of screen content, and an ability to operate over a wider visual quality range. This could make AV2 a valuable asset for emerging technologies like AR/VR headsets, such as Apple Vision Pro and Samsung’s Project Moohan, as both companies are part of AOMedia’s steering committee.

In addition, AV2 utilizes adaptive bitrate delivery, starting programs quickly at a lower quality and ramping up if there's available bandwidth. This could potentially allow for a higher quality experience faster.

According to AOMedia, 88% of its members plan to adopt AV2 within the next two years. The companies in the governing board of AOMedia, which could offer AV2-compatible streaming services, include Amazon, Apple, ARM, Facebook (Meta), Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, and Nvidia.

The improvements in AV2 could potentially change the way video streaming is done. With its anticipated benefits for compression efficiency, data demands, and support for emerging technologies, AV2 is poised to take video streaming to the next level. The release of AV2 by the end of 2025 promises an exciting future for the world of video streaming.
