Météo-France Boosts Forecasting Power for Localised Weather and Climate Modeling
Météo-France is beefing up its computing power to revolutionize weather forecasting and clima modeling. The organization is expanding its capabilities, with significant benefits expected for various industries and remote populations.
The upgrade will enable more precise short-term forecasts, now run hourly instead of eight times daily, for a two-to-four-day period. This enhanced resolution, down to 1.3km from 2.5km, will provide more localized forecasts. The next phase will further boost this to 500m around major airports, supporting the aviation industry.
The increased computing power, now at one quadrillion FLOPS, will allow meteorological research teams to test new scenarios swiftly. This will not only improve real-time forecasting but also future clima modeling. Remote populations in territories like La Réunion and New Caledonia will also benefit from high-resolution modeling.
Météo-France's expanded computing capacity will significantly enhance weather forecasting and clima modeling. Industries such as aviation, shipping, tourism, and sports events like the French Open will reap the benefits. Moreover, remote populations will gain access to more accurate and localized weather information.
