Meta's Introduction of Location Sharing Feature on Instagram: Learn How to Opt Out

Instagram's latest feature, the Instagram Map, has been making waves this week. Similar to Snapchat's Snap Map, it allows users to share their most recent location when using the app. However, location sharing is opt-in, meaning it's off by default and your location remains private unless you choose to enable it.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to turn off location sharing on Instagram Map:

  1. Open Instagram and navigate to your Direct Message (DM) inbox.
  2. Tap the Map icon to open the Instagram Map view.
  3. Tap the Settings icon within the Map view.
  4. Go to Settings and activity > Story, Live, and Location.
  5. Tap Location Sharing (Instagram Map).
  6. Select No one to stop sharing your location with anyone.
  7. Tap Done to confirm your changes.

Alternatively, you can disable Instagram's access to your device location entirely. On iPhone, go to Settings > Instagram > Location and choose Never or Ask Next Time. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Permissions > Location and select Deny. You can also disable Precise Location to limit Instagram to knowing only your general area without exact GPS data.

It's also important to avoid tagging locations in stories or posts, as tagged content can appear on the map, especially if your account is public.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has assured users that their live location is never shared unless they choose to turn it on. Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, took to the app to clarify that location sharing is optional and can only be shared with a limited group of people you choose.

Recent reports have shown that some users have found their location was on by default without their knowledge. If you're unsure about your current settings, it's always a good idea to check and adjust as necessary to maintain your privacy.

  • The Instagram Map, similar to Snapchat's Snap Map, has sparked news about business strategy in the social-media world.
  • Enabling location sharing on the Instagram Map could potentially lead to increased success for businesses, as it allows for targeted advertising.
  • The privacy settings on the Instagram Map are crucial for users who value their personal information, particularly their location, as they can choose to opt-out.
• With the rise of technology, entertainment, and social-media platforms, it's essential for users to stay informed about news and updates related to location sharing options, ensuring they maintain control over their online privacy.
