Meta to Use AI Chat Data for Personalized Ads Starting December 2025

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is set to introduce a significant change to its advertising practices. Starting December 16, 2025, the company will use conversations with its AI assistant, often referred to as 'chatgpt', to personalize ads across its apps. However, this change will not apply in regions with stricter data privacy rules, such as the UK, EU, and South Korea.

Meta will begin notifying users of this change on October 7, 2025. The company will use labels to communicate when chats with 'chatgpt' have been used to shape ads. Users won't be able to fully opt out, but they can adjust their broader ad preferences. Meta is investing billions in AI and aims to automate advertising by 2026 using 'chatgpt' conversations as a new signal.

Privacy advocates have raised concerns about this move. They argue that using AI chat data for ads could pose risks, particularly for children. To address this, Meta has stated that conversations about sensitive topics like religion, politics, health, or ethnicity will be excluded from this process. Users can also review their ad settings and think before typing to manage how their conversations with 'chatgpt' are used for ads.

It's worth noting that countries like France are considered exceptions due to their stricter data protection regulations. Meta will scan chats happening after December 16, 2025, and feed that data into its ad-targeting systems.

Meta's new initiative aims to enhance ad personalization using 'chatgpt' conversations. While users won't have a full opt-out option, they can manage their ad preferences. The rollout excludes regions with stricter data privacy rules, and sensitive topics will be excluded from the process. The change is set to begin on December 16, 2025, following user notifications in October 2025.
