Mercedes-Benz to broaden electric vehicle charging infrastructure across South Africa
Mercedes-Benz Bolsters South Africa's Electric Vehicle Charging Network
Mercedes-Benz is making significant strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network in South Africa, with an investment of approximately R40 million planned for the installation of over 120 charging stations across the country. This move is a key step in hastening e-mobility transformation in the Middle East and Africa, as South Africa is seen as a key location for this transformation.
The expansion of the charging network is part of an Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) initiative aimed at increasing electrification in South Africa and creating new jobs. The investment aims to install 127 charging stations in South Africa, with a two-phase plan for the installation of these stations. By the end of Q1 2024, R15 million will be invested to install 67 charging stations, followed by an additional R25 million for the installation of 60 charging stations nationwide in the second phase.
The partnership with Chargify, a leading EV charging technology company, is a crucial aspect of this expansion. Chargify's expertise in ultra-fast, solar-powered, and grid-connected chargers complements Mercedes-Benz's network expansion strategy, facilitating the development of reliable, accessible EV infrastructure across South Africa. The partnership is designed to provide luxury and peace of mind of a comprehensive charging network to all EV drivers.
Mercedes-Benz charging stations will be compatible with other EV brand models, thanks to the partnership with Chargify. The installation of charging stations under this strategic partnership prioritises metropolitan areas, such as airports and shopping malls, followed by small towns across South Africa.
Mercedes-Benz is committed to its electrification strategy and is focusing on becoming greener in major markets and key developing regions. The company aims to reach carbon neutrality by the year 2039, as outlined in its 'Ambition 2039' target. The expansion of the charging network is an essential part of this commitment, supporting the growth of e-mobility in South Africa and the broader MEA region.
