One of the largest track maintenance machines in use - Major Renovation of Berlin-Bitterfeld Railway Line Underway, Closures Until Mid-December
The Anhalter Railway line between Berlin and Bitterfeld is undergoing major renovation, with a full closure until mid-December. The project involves renewing 90 switches and around 130 kilometers of track, including the stretch between Berlin and Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
The renovation work is being carried out using one of the world's largest track construction machines. This massive machine, 700 meters long and weighing around 650 tons, is currently in operation on the closed line. The Bitterfeld junction will also be affected, with a closure planned for the coming weekend, leading to extensive rerouting of long-distance trains.
The renovation of the railway line between Berlin and Lutherstadt Wittenberg is a significant part of this project. Starting on September 24, 2025, the construction work on the Anhalter Bahn from Berlin-Südkreuz to Lutherstadt Wittenberg will see 60 kilometers of tracks and ten switches renewed. This closure affects RE3 and RE4 lines and is expected to last until December 13, 2025. During this period, replacement bus services will be in operation.
The renovation work on the Anhalter Railway line is a substantial undertaking, with significant closures and rerouting of services. The use of one of the world's largest track construction machines highlights the scale of the project. Completion is expected by mid-December, with improved infrastructure for passengers and freight services.
