Macron Urges Europe to Tighten Grip on Russia's 'Shadow Fleet' After Tanker Seizure
French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Europe to step up pressure against Russia's 'shadow fleet', following the seizure of the tanker 'Boracay' off the French coast. The ship, previously known as 'Pushpa' and 'Kiwala', was found carrying a large cargo of Russian oil to India.
The 'Boracay' was reportedly part of Russia's extensive 'shadow fleet', estimated to include up to 1,000 ships. The fleet is believed to be a key tool for Russia to circumvent Western oil sanctions, representing tens of billions of euros in its budget.
The tanker was blacklisted by the European Union and was flying the flag of Benin. French military personnel remained on board the vessel on Thursday, following its interception. The ship was previously spotted off Denmark during mysterious drone flights over the country last month.
The captain and first officer of the 'Boracay' were arrested for refusing to provide evidence of their nationality or cooperate with French authorities. The captain is set to appear in court in February, while the first mate has been released.
The seizure of the 'Boracay' highlights the ongoing efforts of European nations to disrupt Russia's shadow fleet activities. The trial of the captain in February will provide further insights into the operations of these covert oil shipments.
