On August 1, 2025, IM Motors unveiled the "Stellar" super range-extended system, marking a significant step forward in the company's electric vehicle (EV) development. The "Stellar" system, which will debut in the IM LS6, is set to begin pre-sales on August 15.

The "Stellar" system combines a 1.5T engine with electric motors and a 66 kWh battery pack, achieving a combined fuel-electric consumption as low as 2.07L/100km. This system is a product of IM Motors, with the "Super Freevoy MAX" battery, jointly developed with CATL, powering the battery component.

The IM LS6 is not the only vehicle to benefit from the "Stellar" system. The IM LS9, a six-seater SUV, will also feature this technology. The SAIC-Alibaba's IM LS9 EREV, with a power output of 673 hp, is scheduled for launch in Q4.

Meanwhile, the Deepal S05, a Chinese competitor, launched a long-range version with a pure electric range of 620 km. However, the exact battery capacity of the long-range version of the Deepal S05, as of August 1, 2025, has not been explicitly detailed in the available sources. The regular Deepal S05 EV model has a 56.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, and the new long-range variant continues to use CATL-sourced batteries with improved 3C charging technology.

Transitional solutions like range extenders and plug-in hybrids are considered by many vehicle owners to be stepping stones towards fully electric vehicles. However, buyers of range-extended vehicles in China rarely use gasoline due to high costs.

The Chinese new energy vehicle startups' mid-year report shows that only Xpeng is on track for 2025 EV sales targets. With the introduction of the "Stellar" system, IM Motors aims to strengthen its position in the competitive EV market.
