Linking the Cyclades islands to the European electrical grid system
In a notable development for the Greek energy sector, Hitachi Energy has inked a €35 million deal with IPTO for the delivery of four gas-insulated inverter stations. These stations will connect three Cyclades islands - Mykonos, Paros, and Syros - to the continental power grid, with the connection occurring at the port of Lavrion, Attica.
The project, aimed at curbing energy costs on the islands and ensuring a reliable power supply during peak summer demand, will also see the closure of power plants using fossil fuels on the islands, thereby reducing atmospheric pollution.
The contract, signed on September 17, 2014, encompasses the design and manufacture of equipment such as GIS substations, transformers, reactors, capacitors, and Agile systems for substation automation and digitalization. Hitachi Energy will provide three Gas-Insulated Substations (GIS) of 170 kV each, replacing the existing small power plants on the islands.
The project involves the installation of gas-insulated substations, but the specific technology or advantages of this type of substation have not been disclosed. Additionally, no information about the project's timeline or completion date has been provided.
The project's objectives also include ensuring a reliable energy supply during the summer season when electricity demand significantly increases, and shutting down power plants using fossil fuels on the islands to reduce atmospheric pollution. However, the role of IPTO in the project remains unclear.
The connection of these islands to the mainland electricity transmission system is expected to bring numerous benefits, including reduced energy costs and a more sustainable power supply. Further details about the cost to the Greek government or any other parties involved in the project are not currently available.
