LG's latest offering, the C5 OLED TV, earns high praise with a five-star rating; however, I'm choosing not to upgrade for specific reasons.

LG's C5 OLED model earns top marks as a superb TV, yet for personal reasons, I won't be opting for an upgrade.

LG C5 OLED TV: A Solid, Yet Modest Upgrade

The LG C5 OLED TV, a 48-inch model, has been tested and reviewed, but it doesn't bring any significant innovations to the table compared to its predecessor, the LG C2. After thorough testing, the LG C5 OLED TV was concluded to be a five-star TV, but its improvements over the C2 are relatively modest.

The LG C5 OLED TV offers perfect black levels, flawless gaming specifications, reliable picture quality, and solid app support. However, it doesn't feature LG's latest 4th-generation OLED panel found in higher-end models like the G5. The improvements made to LG's C-series sets, including the 48-inch ones, have been incremental.

The C5 offers improvements over the C4, mainly in brightness and color volume, but it's not a major generational leap over the C2. Its panel and processing maintain many of the strengths of prior OLEDs, but without a breakthrough in overall performance or new technologies that substantially change the user experience or picture quality.

The enhancements do enhance the picture's three-dimensional look and immersion, but not enough to markedly outclass the C2. Both models support essential features for gamers, including HDMI 2.1 inputs, which means connectivity and gaming performance are similar, removing another strong upgrade incentive.

The LG C2 OLED TV, which the author has at home, offers a punchy picture that is accurate enough for enjoyable viewing. The LG C5 OLED TV does not go as bright and colors aren't quite as vibrant compared to the C2. Despite testing the 48-inch LG C5 OLED TV, the author did not find the LG C2 wanting in comparison during home viewing.

In conclusion, the LG C5 OLED TV is a solid option for anyone yet to make the jump to OLED. However, its enhancements over the C2 are relatively modest and mainly focus on peak brightness and color depth, which isn't a big enough leap for many users to justify moving from a 48-inch LG C2 to the 48-inch LG C5 OLED TV. The author advises against upgrading a recent C-series OLED TV, suggesting to save money or spend it on a more pressing upgrade elsewhere in the system.

It's worth noting that Panasonic is nipping at the heels of the LG C5 OLED TV in the market, and the author's opinion might change if the LG C2 and C5 were watched side-by-side in a test room. But for now, the LG C2 OLED TV remains a reliable and enjoyable choice for many. The LG C5 OLED TV retains the Korean giant's legacy as one of the top small-ish OLED TV makers, but it's not a slam-dunk, no-brainer purchase due to the lack of progress at this size.
