Tesla Faces Multiple Legal Challenges Over Autonomous Driving Technology

Tesla, the electric vehicle giant, is currently embroiled in a series of legal battles that question the readiness and safety of its autonomous driving technology, particularly the Robotaxi service.

The most recent notable development is a federal jury in Miami finding Tesla one-third liable for a fatal crash involving its autonomous vehicle, resulting in a $243 million damages award. The verdict, handed down on August 1, cites misleading safety claims and design flaws in Tesla's Autopilot system. Tesla disputes the verdict and plans to appeal, insisting the driver was at fault and denying that the Autopilot system caused the crash.

In addition to this product liability case, Tesla faces ongoing securities class action lawsuits accusing the company and certain officers of securities fraud linked to their marketing claims about Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Robotaxi technologies. The lead plaintiff motions for these securities class actions must be filed by October 3-4, 2025.

The legal challenges also include increased regulatory scrutiny by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is investigating Tesla Robotaxi incidents and traffic law violations that have attracted public and investor concern.

These developments have led to a decline in Tesla's stock, with a roughly 30% drop since 2023 amid the ongoing legal and regulatory pressures. The jury verdict and rising lawsuits mark a potential turning point, potentially making future settlements costlier for Tesla and undermining its ambitious autonomous driving and Robotaxi deployment plans.

The lead plaintiff in these securities class actions is Denise Morand, a Tesla shareholder. The lawsuit seeks damages on behalf of investors who bought Tesla stock between April 19, 2023, and June 22, 2025.

As of now, the current status of the class-action lawsuit against Tesla over alleged misrepresentation of its autonomous driving technology and Robotaxi service is that multiple legal actions are underway, reflecting a growing wave of scrutiny and litigation risks for Tesla in 2025.
