Latest Developments and Future Enhancements in TRI Tools Functionality
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced its schedule for the upcoming updates to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) online tools and data files.
The latest update to EasyRSEI was made on March 21, 2024, while the next planned update for TRI National Analysis is scheduled for August 2025.
In accordance with the annual update cycle, the EPA plans to release the 2024 TRI Preliminary Dataset and update related tools such as TRI Explorer, TRI Toxics Tracker, and the Envirofacts P2 Search Tool by late October 2025, around October 23-30. Further refinements and analyses are expected in spring 2026.
Specifically, the update schedule for 2024 data is as follows:
- October 23–30, 2025: Release of preliminary data files and initial updates to most tools (TRI Explorer, TRI Toxics Tracker, Envirofacts P2 Search Tool)
- Spring 2026: More complete data refreshes and updates
Other TRI-related resources, such as the TRI National Analysis and EasyRSEI, have their own schedules. They were last updated in early 2024 for 2023 data and are expected to update in early 2025 for subsequent years.
It is worth noting that the TRI-CHIP tool has not been updated since December 2021, with future updates labeled TBD (to be determined).
Notifications about the availability of updated TRI data and tools are announced on the TRI homepage and sent to TRI listserv subscribers by email.
In summary, the annual update cycle follows facility reporting by July 1, EPA data processing and quality checks through the summer/fall, and the release of updated data files and online tool refreshes mostly in October each year, with further analysis updates in the following spring.
science plays a crucial role in the EPA's efforts to manage environmental hazards, as evidenced by the regular updates to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) online tools. For instance, technology is utilized to develop and maintain these tools, such as the TRI Explorer, TRI Toxics Tracker, and Envirofacts P2 Search Tool. Moreover, finance is involved in ensuring the continuity of these initiatives, as the EPA plans to release the 2024 TRI Preliminary Dataset and update related tools by late October 2025, which might require substantial funding.
