Lancia Enthusiasts Buzz Over Designer's Montecarlo Revival
Lancia enthusiasts are abuzz with excitement as designer Christopher Giroux, in his personal capacity, has revived the iconic Montecarlo for its 50th anniversary. Dubbed the Pu+Ra Montecarlo, this modern take on the classic sports car borrows cues from the 2023 Pu+Ra HPE Concept and pays homage to Lancia's rich rally history.
Giroux, a senior exterior designer at Ford, has not been officially tasked with designing current or upcoming Lancia models. However, his passion project, the Pu+Ra Montecarlo, is a stunning blend of Lancia's modern styling and classic Montecarlo design elements. The coupe features slim T-shaped LEDs and circular elements on the hood, roof, and rear deck, reminiscent of the original Montecarlo.
The rally-ready version of the Pu+Ra Montecarlo wears the livery of Alitalia, honoring Lancia's WRC past. It also boasts aggressive aerodynamic upgrades, ready to tackle the toughest rally stages. Giroux hinted at a possible hybrid arrangement with a mid-mounted combustion engine, suggesting a performance-oriented powertrain.
Looking ahead, Lancia's lineup is set to expand beyond the current Ypsilon subcompact hatchback. A larger Gamma crossover and the long-awaited Delta are on the horizon, promising a diverse range of models for Lancia fans. The revival of a Lancia sports car, however, depends on the brand's sales success.
The Pu+Ra Montecarlo is more than just a tribute; it's a glimpse into what could be. If Lancia's sales continue to grow, we may see this stunning coupe hit the roads, leading the brand's resurgence in the sports car segment. For now, we can only admire Giroux's masterful blend of past and present, and hope that the future holds more like it.
