Japan Adopts Barcodes and QR Codes as New Norm for Cashless Transactions
In a recent survey by Kufū Company Holdings, it was revealed that over 84% of Japanese consumers are using QR/barcode payments for purchases, surpassing physical credit cards and electronic money as the most common form of cashless transactions in Japan.
The survey, conducted on 2,559 users of Kufū Company Holdings' household budgeting app and related services, sheds light on the growing popularity of QR/barcode payments in Japan. This shift towards digital payments reflects a unique payment ecosystem evolving from Japan’s long-standing cash culture towards a more diverse and tech-savvy cashless environment.
The Rise of QR/Barcode Payments
QR/barcode payments offer a range of benefits that have contributed to their widespread adoption. Ease and speed are key advantages, with over 75% of users appreciating the convenience of quick checkouts by simply scanning a code.
Another significant benefit is the ability to earn points or receive cashback. Over 75% of users cited this as a major incentive for using QR/barcode payments.
Peer-to-peer transfers are also a popular feature, with around 22% of users appreciating the convenience of transferring money between individuals, such as splitting bills.
Additionally, QR/barcode payments have lower setup and transaction costs for merchants, making them accessible and cost-effective. They are easily accessible via smartphones, reducing the need for additional devices. Moreover, they offer a contactless payment option, which is particularly important in a post-pandemic context.
Challenges and Concerns
Despite their popularity, QR/barcode payments face some challenges. Limited acceptance by some stores is the most common drawback, with 62.2% of users expressing this concern.
While concerns about unauthorized use and security issues are less prevalent, with only about 26% expressing such concerns, they still represent a factor to consider.
It's worth noting that cash remains prevalent, especially among older demographics, and convenience store payment and cash-on-delivery methods are still common.
In comparison, Japan’s cashless payment penetration (about 39.3%) still lags behind South Korea (90%) and China (60%), but QR payments are a key driver of growth and consumer adoption.
As the use of QR/barcode payments continues to grow, addressing the concerns about acceptance and security will be crucial to further expanding their usage and cementing their place as a preferred cashless payment method in Japan.
