Jaguar's XJ Series 2, introduced in late 1973, is a classic car that offers an affordable entry into Jaguar ownership. This updated version of the 1968 original came with various improvements and a range of powerful engines.
The Series 2 was a thorough update, featuring a higher-set front bumper, revised grille, and a new dashboard layout. It also brought technical upgrades, including the replacement of the 2.8-litre six-cylinder engine with a proven 3.4-litre unit. This engine was also offered in 4.2-litre and 5.3-litre V12 variants. Initially, two wheelbase lengths were available, but the short-wheelbase version was quickly phased out.
In total, 127,961 Series 2s were built, with nearly half being the popular 4.2-litre models. Today, usable six-cylinder examples typically fetch £8000-£12,000, while well-kept cars can rise closer to £18,000. Exceptional, low-mileage or concours-standard cars can reach £35,000-£40,000. The sought-after V12s and Daimler-badged variants command a premium, with the best exceeding £25,000 when presented in top condition. The XJC coupe, offered with 4.2- or 5.3-litre power, was also available but sold in modest numbers before being replaced by the XJ-S in 1977.
