Intricate Tracking Unveiled with Accuracy at Friedrichstadt-Palast
In the heart of Berlin, the renowned Friedrichstadt-Palast theatre is currently captivating audiences with its latest production, FALLING | IN LOVE. This enchanting fantasy tale, adorned with colourful costumes and exuberant visual design, is making waves for its innovative use of technology.
The theatre team embarked on a mission to find a tracking solution to manage the sound and light tracking needs for FALLING | IN LOVE. Enter bright!, a visual design and technology studio, who played a pivotal role in enabling lighting and audio technology for the production.
A total of 31 OptiTrack cameras were integrated for the tracking area of 400 square meters, transforming the stage into a digital canvas. The cameras were instrumental in tracking the movements of the artists, ensuring that each performer was followed by a coloured spotlight throughout the production.
One of the key requirements was to implement backlight follows of the three main characters during the show. This was the first time the theatre had considered a tracking solution, and it proved to be a game-changer. Without an automated tracking solution, the effect of following the artists with spotlights would not have been possible.
The SP tracking solution, provided by Stage Precision, was 100% on budget and offers a toolkit that is upgradeable. This system was used to manage complex spotlight changes required as the story unfolded on stage, and it also allowed for video tracking in the future.
The positional information from SP is used to change filters in the L-Acoustics L-ISA system to ensure clarity of speech for the audience. This ensured that every word spoken by the artists was heard clearly, even during the most dynamic scenes.
The development of a new optical tracking feature within SP was a result of the needs of the Friedrichstadt-Palast team. The production of FALLING | IN LOVE is the first project with camera tracking functionality natively integrated within SP.
The Stage Precision team provided significant support during the implementation of the SP tracking solution at Friedrichstadt-Palast. Incoming data from these cameras is received in SP where it triggers automated commands to control the spotlights. Six or seven artists are being tracked on stage at any time, with multiple tracking beacons in play due to costume changes.
Precision and safety are paramount in any stage production, and tracking solutions like those from Stage Precision enable precise positioning and movement of performers, props, or set pieces. This is crucial for maintaining safety during complex performances, ensuring that movements are choreographed accurately to avoid accidents.
