Interview with VFX Editor, Liyana Mansor, on Artistic Endeavors
Liyana Mansor: A Rising Star in the VFX Industry
Liyana Mansor, a London-based freelance VFX editor and editor, has made a significant impact in the visual effects (VFX) industry over the past decade. With a diverse portfolio that includes notable productions such as Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, The Alienist, Chernobyl, Alien: Covenant, Black Mirror, and the recent Star Wars series Andor (2022), Mansor's work is a testament to her technical skill and creative insight.
Mansor's journey in the VFX industry began after graduating from Leeds College of Art and Design. She started her career in post-production as a runner at a large post house in London in 2012. Her first VFX editor role was on the critically acclaimed series Black Mirror, and from there, she moved onto the super VFX heavy film Alien: Covenant.
When it comes to her work, Mansor relies on custom macros on her Razor mouse to cycle through multiple repeated actions, making her workflow efficient and precise. She uses a variety of tools, including the Wacom Intuos Pro tablet paired with Avid Media Composer and visual effects plugins like Continuum and Sapphire for temporary compositing work. The intuitive and tactile nature of the Wacom pen extends her hand, allowing fluid, quick, and precise work necessary for her job.
Mansor's advice to her younger self is to never hesitate or count herself out of an opportunity, regardless of feeling ready. When faced with creative burnout, she suggests working on something else and coming back to the original task later or the next day.
Mansor's work on The Alienist and Chernobyl fills her with pride. Among her favourite films are Gwoemul (The Host) by Bong Joon-ho and snacks like Cinnamon Social slices and Candy Kittens help her power through long work sessions.
Recently, Mansor has been nominated for her first Emmy as Lead VFX Editor on Andor. She is also involved in developing a VFX Editing workshop for Assistant Editors across Europe in collaboration with TEMPO and Netflix, indicating a role in education and community development within the VFX industry.
If given the opportunity, Mansor would love to collaborate with artists like Bong Joon-ho, Yang Jinmo, and Rian Johnson, admiring their unique and impressive work in film and VFX. Mansor's journey reflects a solid decade of progressively responsible roles in freelance VFX editing for high-profile film and television projects in London, bringing both technical skill in compositing and editorial insight to her work.
