Internet's Impact on Madame Web, According to Emma Roberts: A Destructive Force

Memes bubbled up in response to a snippet of dialogue in the trailer, shaping public perception about the superhero film.

Internet's Impact on Madame Web, According to Emma Roberts: A Destructive Force

The web's grip on viral moments, such as the controversial trailer quote from Madame Web, can certainly steer the narrative around a movie, be it for better or worse. Take the infamous quote, "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died." You've got it, that eyebrow-raising line that doesn't even appear in the actual Sony Pictures Spider-Man Universe flick. That bulletpoint of dialogue truly set the stage for a conversation that would, sometimes, polarize the flick.

In a chat with Variety during the promotions of her current flick, Space Cadet, Emma Roberts, our beloved Mary Parker from Madame Web, shared some thoughts about the film's meme trajectory. A movie she truly believed in, she stated, "Things work, things don't work. Everyone likes to act like they can predict if they're going to work or they're not. And the truth is, you can't. Things do badly, and then they blow up later on TikTok. Things do well, but then you watch them, and you're like, 'This did well?' There is no secret. It's about doing something goodish and it hitting at the right time. Everything else is like a wish and a prayer."

Roberts' screen time in Madame Web wasn't too little, featuring a memorable baby shower, as well as a pivotal third-act rescue sequence opposite Dakota Johnson. She continued, "I'm not intimidated by failure, and I'm not intimidated by people having negative thoughts about something. I personally really loved Madame Web. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think did an amazing job. She's the reason I wanted to do that movie."

The actress then took a jab at internet culture, highlighting its habit of making everything into a joke. "If it wasn't for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would've been different. And that's what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I've done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now."

Currently streaming on Netflix, Madame Web survives another day in the digital world, much like an arachnid clutching onto its web.
