The tech world is abuzz with the upcoming launch of the ROG Xbox Ally, scheduled for October 16. This handheld gaming device will mark the debut of Microsoft's Xbox Full Screen Experience, with other handhelds following suit in the near future.

The Xbox Full Screen Experience is set to revolutionise handheld gaming, offering a console-like experience on portable PCs. To access this feature, users must become Windows Insiders, update to the 25H2 version, and utilise the third-party tool Vivetool.

The MSI Claw 8 AI, a top-tier Windows handheld, is already prepared to support this new gaming mode. However, early adopters have encountered some issues, such as the user planning to spend their evenings troubleshooting the Xbox Full Screen Experience on the Lenovo Legion Go S.

Asus, the manufacturer of the ROG Xbox Ally, has highlighted Microsoft's Xbox Full Screen Experience as one of its key selling points. The ROG Xbox Ally, with its promise of console-quality gaming on a handheld device, is poised to shake up the handheld gaming market.

SteamOS has long been a dominant force in the handheld gaming scene, but Microsoft's entry with the Xbox Full Screen Experience is set to challenge its dominance. The instructions for setting up the Full Screen Experience mode can be found on Reddit, thanks to user Gogsi123.

The question remains, however, whether the Xbox Full Screen Experience will offer performance and efficiency improvements, or if that will remain the preserve of Linux-based operating systems like SteamOS and Bazzite. The developer who created the registry keys needed to enable this feature for Windows handhelds using Vivetool is Albacore.

Interestingly, the creator of these registry keys, Jacob, has a unique background. He is both a hardware geek and a philosophy nerd, with experience working as a Hardware Writer for PCGamesN in 2020, and freelancing for sites such as TechRadar, Pocket-lint, and PC Gamer. He later joined PC Gamer full-time. Jacob vowed never to let another soul build his rig again after realising the local PC repair store had ripped him off with his first gaming PC build.

As the launch of the ROG Xbox Ally approaches, gamers are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to experience the Xbox Full Screen Experience for themselves. The future of handheld gaming is undoubtedly exciting, with Microsoft's entry promising to shake up the market and challenge the status quo.
