In just three years, DC has taken the comics world by storm with its groundbreaking series, "The Nice House on the Lake." This oh-so-gripping tale follows a band of pals huddled together to weather the apocalypse, under the seemingly friendly guidance of an alien pretending to be their buddy. Now, it's time to revisit the end of days... with a fresh batch of humanity's last kicks.
Last month, DC confirmed that star scribes James Tynion IV, Álvaro Martínez Bueno, Jordie Bellaire, and Andworld Design are reuniting for another edgy, 12-issue run fantasizing in the same universe as The Nice House on the Lake, dubbed The Nice House by the Sea. Like its lake-side counterpart, By the Sea whisks 10 survivors off to a luxurious abode as the remaining world crumbles in a nightmarish Armageddon.
Much like the lake house, the ocean-side mansion is managed by a solitary, extraterrestrial overlord, this time a cryptic figure tagged Max. Contrasting the friendly, interconnected circle of friends on the lake, those living by the sea are strangers at best, with a dose of open animosity. These 10 newbies, differing from By the Sea's motley crew, knew upfront they were being herded together as humanity's final gleams of hope.
When By the Sea was revealed back in April, their professions were the only details offered; The Doctor, The Writer, The Historian, The Actor, The Artist, The Priest, The Scientist, The Singer, The Politician, and The Mathematician. But now, io9 can help fill in their faces as we peek inside the first issue.
"Unlike our lake house denizens, the inhabitants of The Nice House by the Sea have accepted the death of every friend, family member, and dearest love," Tynion stated in DC's press release announcing By the Sea. "They accepted the end of the human race and their designation as the last humans that will ever exist. For some, it's a truth they find acceptable, but their approaches vary-avoiding the very thought of their impending extinction."
