India's CII and IGBC Team Up for Green Logistics, GIFT City Gets Platinum Rating Ahead of COP26
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) have collaborated to create the IGBC Green Logistics Parks and Warehouses Rating System. Meanwhile, India's first Greenfield Smart City, GIFT City, has achieved the IGBC Green Cities Platinum rating. These developments align with the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C, as discussed at the upcoming COP26 summit.
CII established the Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre in 2004, aiming to transform India into a global leader in green businesses by 2022. The IGBC, known for developing green building rating systems, has set a target to facilitate 10 billion sq ft of green building footprint by 2022. In 2021, the CII IGBC launched the IGBC Mission on Net Zero, aiming to help India achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
India has made progress in reducing its emission intensity of GDP, achieving a 28% reduction over 2005 levels, and increasing its renewable energy capacity to 38.5%. Over 6,780 green building projects, covering 7.86 billion sq ft, have adopted IGBC green standards. The CII-Godrej GBC provides advisory services in resource efficiency and sustainability, equipping the Indian industry with emerging green concepts.
With over 190 leaders from various countries set to gather in Glasgow for COP26, India's commitment to green initiatives, as seen in its collaboration with CII and IGBC, is expected to play a significant role in the global climate action discussions.
