India to Witness Construction of Gigantic Electrolyzer Factory by Horizon
India is set to take a significant step towards a decarbonised economy with the announcement of Horizon Group's plans to establish an electrolyser gigafactory in the country. This move is expected to bolster the production of green hydrogen, a priority under the Government of India's "Green Hydrogen Mission."
The Horizon Group, known for its expertise in constructing capital-efficient, world-class production capabilities in fuel cell and electrolyser technologies, is aiming to deliver cost-effective green hydrogen for projects of all sizes. The company's new venture is expected to play a significant role in India's efforts to lead globally in the adoption of hydrogen in various sectors, including green steel, sustainable fuels, and zero emission heavy transport.
HET Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Horizon Fuel Cell, is collaborating with a long-term distribution partner to establish a joint venture, Indify Fuel Cell Private Ltd, for building electrolyser assembly facilities in India. Indify aims to gradually increase the Indian content in future systems to reduce the levelised cost of green hydrogen.
The joint venture aims to produce Gigawatt (GW) quantities of electrolysers in two stages, with the initial phase capable of assembling at least 100 Megawatts (MW) per year. HET has commercialized MW-scale Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers and is preparing to introduce MW-scale AEM electrolysers based on proprietary membrane and stack technology.
The startup phase of the electrolyser assembly facilities is expected to become operational in early 2026. Indify Fuel Cell Private Ltd plans to operate a 1MW HET electrolyser in India by March 2025. This operational electrolyser will be used for customer demonstration and local performance validation.
Several potential manufacturing locations for the electrolyser facilities have been identified by HET Hydrogen, with a preferred location to be confirmed in the coming months. The initiatives undertaken recently aim to kick-start hydrogen production and various hydrogen applications in India.
While details about the timeline, location, or planned production capacity for Horizon's electrolyser gigafactory in India are currently unavailable, it is clear that this venture is a significant step towards India's goal of leveraging some of the world's lowest cost green hydrogen in its future decarbonised economy.
