In the year 2025, around 34,000 YouTube channels identified as foreign propaganda operations were removed.
The latest developments in Google's efforts to combat foreign influence campaigns on YouTube have been revealed, with the tech giant removing nearly 11,000 YouTube channels and related accounts during the second quarter of 2025. These removals are part of an intensified crackdown by Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) targeting large-scale, state-sponsored propaganda networks that engage in "coordinated inauthentic behavior."
The majority of the removed channels were linked to China and Russia. Over 7,700 channels were linked to Chinese influence networks, posting content in Chinese and English that promoted the Chinese government, praised President Xi Jinping, and framed U.S. foreign policy from a PRC perspective. More than 2,000 channels were tied to Russian operations, spreading multilingual pro-Russian narratives supporting Moscow’s positions on Ukraine, NATO, and Western countries. Many were connected to state-backed media like RT, whose affiliated channels and associated Google Ads and Blogger accounts were also removed as part of these efforts.
Beyond China and Russia, Google also took down influence campaigns linked to countries including Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Israel, Romania, and Ghana, addressing attempts to escalate geopolitical conflicts such as narratives from both sides of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
These removals signify Google’s commitment to curbing manipulative content on YouTube, which helps reduce the spread of disinformation and propaganda that can distort public understanding of international affairs and domestic political issues. By limiting state-linked coordinated influence operations, Google aims to protect users from biased or misleading narratives, thereby supporting a healthier information environment.
In terms of news consumption, YouTube has become a significant source of news for many Americans. According to the 14th annual Digital News Report by Oxford's Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ), 54% of people surveyed used social media and video networks as a news source in the past week. American users' preference for social media over television news is currently at 72%, compared to 55% in 2021. For the first time, social media has displaced television as the top way people consume their news.
Interestingly, YouTube outranks Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok as Americans' preferred source for news on social media. This makes YouTube the preferred source for news across social media for Americans, according to Oxford's RISJ.
Google’s aggressive quarterly takedowns—including over 34,000 channels removed so far in 2025—demonstrate a sustained response to evolving geopolitical disinformation threats impacting global audiences and news ecosystems. The number of YouTube channels removed in the last three months (April, May, and June) was approximately 11,000, a significant decline from the first three months of the year (23,000).
These efforts by Google are crucial in maintaining a trustworthy news environment on YouTube, given its growing role as a major news source worldwide.
