In China, Tesla submits an application for a new Model 3 variant, touting a potential range of up to 800 kilometers.

Tesla has filed for a new Model 3 sedan variant in China, which could become the company's longest-range model. The single-motor Model 3+, if approved, is expected to offer an estimated range exceeding 800 kilometers or approximately 497 miles on a full charge.

This surpasses the current range of the Model 3 all-wheel-drive long-range version, which offers about 753 kilometers. However, the EPA range would likely be lower, around 350 miles, following the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's rating system.

The Model 3+ is a single-motor model with a peak motor power of 225 kW. It shares the same dimensions as other Model 3 variants, measuring 4,720 mm in length, 1,848 mm in width, 1,442 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,875 mm.

The Model 3 currently offers three variants in China: the entry-level rear-wheel-drive version, the long-range all-wheel-drive version, and the all-wheel-drive performance version. The entry-level rear-wheel drive version is equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from CATL, while the other two variants use ternary batteries from LG Energy Solution.

The Model 3+ uses ternary lithium-ion batteries from South Korea's LG Energy Solution. The curb weight of the Model 3+ is 1,760 kilograms, the same as the base Model 3, with a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour.

The Model 3's retail sales in China have been on an upward trend. From January to June, the Model 3's retail sales totaled 91,919 units, showing a 30.38% year-on-year increase. In June, the Model 3's retail sales totaled 16,636 units, showing an 8.35% year-on-year decrease, but a 20.39% increase compared to May.

The new regulatory catalog for the Model 3+ is open for public comment from July 17 to 23. Inclusion in the filing is the final major regulatory step required for a vehicle to be permitted for sale in China.

Tesla also plans to launch a 6-seat Model Y L in China this fall, adding to its growing portfolio of electric vehicles in the country.

  1. The Model 3+, a single-motor variant, has been filed by Tesla in China, aiming to surpass the company's current longest-range Model 3 with an estimated range exceeding 800 kilometers.
  2. Unlike the entry-level Model 3 in China that uses lithium iron phosphate batteries from CATL, the Model 3+ utilizes ternary lithium-ion batteries from South Korea's LG Energy Solution.
  3. If approved, the Model 3+, which shares the same dimensions as other Model 3 variants, will join the existing lineup in China, consisting of the entry-level rear-wheel-drive version, the long-range all-wheel-drive version, and the all-wheel-drive performance version.
  4. The Model 3+, with a peak motor power of 225 kW, has a curb weight of 1,760 kilograms and a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour, similar to the base Model 3.
  5. The automotive industry in China is closely monitoring Tesla's new Model 3+, given its potential to reshape the electric vehicle landscape, particularly in the realm of energy and transportation technology.
  6. The launch of the 6-seat Model Y L in China this fall by Tesla further expands the company's footprint in the Chinese market, bolstering its position in the automotive and technology sectors.
