Hyundai Tucson N: A Performance-Focused Hybrid SUV on the Horizon

Hyundai N affirms transition to hybrid performance-centric models, initiating with Tucson N

Hyundai is set to diversify its performance line-up with the introduction of the Tucson N, a hybrid model that prioritizes driving excitement over just efficiency. This move comes at a time when many carmakers are going all-in on electric propulsion.

The Tucson N will be part of Hyundai N's strategy, which focuses on creating lighter, more agile hybrid models that combine internal combustion engines (ICE) with electrification. Unlike mainstream Hyundai hybrids, which are primarily aimed at fuel economy and everyday practicality, the N models, such as the forthcoming Tucson N, will use advanced petrol-electric hybrid powertrains for enhanced driving dynamics.

Key features of the Tucson N include a next-generation 1.6-liter turbo hybrid engine paired with technologies like electric rear axles to provide all-wheel-drive capability and improve handling. The emphasis is on nimbleness, agility, and sporty handling, aiming to deliver a true sports-SUV driving experience.

Hyundai N is not abandoning traditional ICE performance or pure EVs. While halo electric cars like the IONIQ 5 N and upcoming IONIQ 6 N showcase high-performance EV technology, the N sub-brand will continue developing hybrid models that blend traditional petrol power with electrification for a distinctive driving experience.

Regarding future models such as the Kona, i20, and i30, while specific hybrid N versions have not been officially announced, given Hyundai N’s expanding hybrid strategy and focus on electrified performance, it is plausible these models could eventually receive performance-oriented hybrid variants as technology and market demand evolve.

In summary, the Hyundai Tucson N represents a new era for Hyundai N, where performance options will be delivered through multiple powertrain technologies. The strategic intent is to keep driving engagement central to its engineering in smaller, hybrid models, creating agile, driver-focused hot hatches and crossovers. The Tucson N hybrid is expected to debut later in the decade, with potential expansions to other models in the future.
