Hydrogen Europe's Board recently appointed Dr. Sopna Sury as their new chairman. Sury, the COO of Hydrogen at RWE Generation, assumes this position.

In the world of hydrogen energy, a significant change has taken place. Dr. Sopna Sury, a renowned German economist and manager, has been elected as the new Chairwoman of Hydrogen Europe's board, succeeding Jon André Løkke.

Dr. Sury's appointment was announced on April 26, 2023, following the board elections. She will serve in this role until June 2025, steering Hydrogen Europe, a leading industry association that champions the hydrogen economy in Europe and fosters collaborative initiatives across sectors and countries.

Jon André Løkke, the former CEO and board member of Norway-based hydrogen technology company Nel Hydrogen, held the position for over two years. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the European hydrogen policy landscape. Løkke expressed gratitude for his time with Hydrogen Europe, stating that he enjoyed working with the competent team and wishes luck to the new Chair, Dr. Sury, and the rest of the Hydrogen Europe team.

Løkke will now focus his efforts elsewhere, having decided not to take re-election as a board member of Nel Hydrogen. He will continue to prioritize challenges where he can make the biggest impact, particularly in the realm of the energy transition and a net-zero world.

Dr. Sopna Sury, in her inaugural statement, emphasized the importance of a rapid ramp-up of the hydrogen economy in Europe for the success of the energy transition. She stressed that society, politics, and industry must assume joint responsibility for the production, transportation, and use of hydrogen in sufficient quantities quickly.

Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, expressed delight at Dr. Sury's appointment. He noted that her leadership will be instrumental in guiding hydrogen policy, innovation, and industry coordination at the European level. The European hydrogen sector is indeed moving from preparation to action, and under Dr. Sury's guidance, it is poised to make significant strides.

As Dr. Sopna Sury takes the helm, the future of Hydrogen Europe and the European hydrogen industry looks bright. Løkke, for his part, is looking forward to seeing the team in action and wishes them the best of luck in their endeavours.
