Honeywell acquires Li-ion Tamer® lithium-ion battery monitoring technology from Nexceris

In a strategic move, Nexceris, a leading innovator in advanced materials and component-level products, has sold its Li-ion Tamer® lithium-ion battery monitoring technology to Honeywell. This transaction, which took place in July 2025, allows Nexceris to focus on breakthrough technologies across various energy markets.

Li-ion Tamer®, an industry-premier solution for preventing thermal runaway events in lithium-ion batteries, was developed by Nexceris in response to the critical safety needs highlighted by a catastrophic battery fire at a U.S. Navy shipyard. The technology, which detects off-gassing—a key early warning sign—provides crucial advance notice of potential battery fires.

During its partnership with Honeywell over the past five years, Li-ion Tamer® has been successfully distributed worldwide, resulting in over 400 million hours of sensing deployed. This partnership has now evolved, with Honeywell acquiring the technology to expand its fire life safety portfolio within the Building Automation business.

Honeywell plans to integrate Li-ion Tamer® into its existing fire safety ecosystem, including advanced smoke detection systems and IoT-enabled fire system management platforms. The early off-gas detection provided by Li-ion Tamer® offers up to 30 minutes of warning before thermal runaway fires, significantly enhancing safety in high-risk environments such as data centers, electric vehicle infrastructure, and grid-scale energy storage.

With lithium-ion battery demand expected to grow over 30% annually through 2030, Honeywell views this acquisition as a strategic move to position itself as a leader in early gas detection and battery fire prevention, aiming to bolster the growth of its fire detection business.

Randall Stacy, Chief Commercial Officer and Managing Partner at Nexceris, was involved in the sale of Li-ion Tamer®. Despite the sale, Nexceris' ongoing partnership with Honeywell remains unaffected, continuing to deliver Li-ion Tamer® to energy storage applications worldwide.

Nexceris' team is excited about the impact they can make in the clean energy sector, both in the renewable and fossil fuel industries. The company boasts a robust portfolio of innovations designed to enable greater efficiency, cleaner energy production, and enhanced safety.

GreenFront Energy Partners served as the exclusive financial advisor to Nexceris for this transaction. Li-ion Tamer® is no longer part of Nexceris' product portfolio, having been sold to Honeywell.

In summary, Li-ion Tamer® originated from Nexceris' response to critical lithium-ion battery fire safety needs, evolving into a global monitoring solution. The recent acquisition by Honeywell allows Nexceris to focus on other clean energy technologies, while Honeywell plans to scale and integrate the technology within its fire safety portfolio, leveraging its global footprint to drive growth amid increasing lithium-ion battery adoption and associated safety demands.

Nexceris, with the proceeds from the sale, aims to invest in breakthrough technologies within the finance sector, particularly those that support clean energy initiatives and align with their mission.

Honeywell's acquisition of Li-ion Tamer® marks a significant expansion in their fire safety technology offerings, venturing into the technology and finance industries.
