"Heat pump leads the way in first-half year sales"
In a significant shift towards sustainable energy solutions, heat pumps have become the best-selling heating system in the first half of the year. This trend, driven by a combination of factors, marks a clear move away from fossil-fuel-based heating systems.
According to reports from the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH) and the Federal Association of Heat Pumps (BWP), over 139,000 units of heat pumps were sold between January and June, representing a 55 percent increase from the previous year and the highest first-half sales on record. The BDH and the BWP reported that the first quarter saw a 35 percent increase in heat pump sales, which further escalated in the second quarter.
The success of heat pumps is attributed to several key factors. Government incentives and mandates, such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act’s federal tax credits and state rebates, Germany’s renewable heat requirements, and subsidy programs in Canada and the UK, have created strong demand and reduced the financial barriers to heat pump adoption.
Technological advances and cost reductions, particularly in inverter-driven compressors and cold-climate heat pump technologies, have made heat pumps more efficient and affordable, facilitating wider market penetration. As existing heating systems reach the end of their life, consumers and businesses are increasingly choosing electric heat pumps over fossil fuel options, supported by increasing electrification efforts in developed markets.
Hybrid heat pumps and other variants that reduce carbon emissions while maintaining efficiency are gaining traction globally, particularly in regions prioritizing air quality and sustainability. The expanding heat pump market, projected to grow significantly in the next years, combined with diverse sales channels and a focus on residential and commercial segments, supports sustained demand growth.
However, the success of heat pumps is not guaranteed. The associations are concerned about potential political interventions that could counteract the trend towards heat pumps. Martin Sabel, Managing Director of the BWP, warned against confusing political interventions that could revive demand for oil and gas, going against the trend. Sabel also emphasized that homeowners have a clear preference for heat pumps, with a majority understanding that heating with fossil fuels has no future.
The new federal government will play a crucial role in the success of heat pumps, as stated by the associations. The current global situation brings high risks in terms of price and supply security for heating with fossil fuels, according to Martin Sabel. Heating with fossil fuels is harmful to the climate, as explained by Sabel, making the shift towards heat pumps an essential step towards a more sustainable future.

- In an effort to promote sustainable energy solutions, the Commission has also been consulted on the draft directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the labelling of foodstuffs, considering the importance of renewable-energy sources in the heat pump industry.
- The success of the heat pump market, projected to grow significantly in the next years, could have a significant impact on the finance sector, as more consumers and businesses invest in renewable-energy technology for heat pump systems.
- As the shift towards sustainable energy solutions continues, the new federal government should prioritize policies that support the growth of renewable-energy technologies, such as heat pumps, in order to ensure the future finance, energy efficiency, and technology progress of the industry.
