Google joins forces with Vaulted Deep to combat carbon emissions, aiming to quantify the reduction of methane by burying biomass.
In a significant move towards addressing climate change, Google has joined forces with waste management solutions startup Vaulted Deep to explore the quantification of methane emissions elimination from Vaulted Deep's process. This collaboration, also involving Isometric and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), is an extension of Google's efforts to mitigate the impacts of superpollutants like methane.
Methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas, is responsible for as much as 80 times the warming power of CO2. The absence of consistent, verifiable methods to account for methane's true climate and health impacts has made it challenging for industry, policymakers, and communities to accurately assess its role in global warming.
The partnership will produce a detailed scientific report on quantifying methane emissions, aiming to align on criteria for rigorous methane measurement and accounting. Vaulted Deep, spun out of Advantek in 2023, manages organic waste from municipalities, industrial operators, and agricultural producers. Their approach to burying biomass can result in carbon removal and significant climate-related benefits through the removal of methane.
The waste sector accounts for approximately 40% of U.S. methane emissions, according to the EPA. Rapid reduction in methane emissions is one of the most effective near-term actions to help achieve the global climate goal to limit warming to 1.5°C.
Google has agreed to purchase 50,000 tons of CO2 removal by 2030 as part of the new partnership. The carbon-rich biomass is injected deep underground for permanent storage by Vaulted Deep.
The collaboration does not repeat earlier facts about Google's carbon removal agreement with Vaulted Deep or Vaulted Deep's carbon sequestration methods. Instead, it focuses on the challenging task of quantifying methane emissions reductions, which can be affected by a variety of factors.
The results of the scientific report will be shared openly to help guide decisions across the sector. Google is committed to expanding the scientific rigor and transparency for measuring the atmospheric impact of CO2 to superpollutants like methane. This collaboration is a step forward in creating a more sustainable future for all.
