Google is updating the appearance of Google Keep with a new, dynamic redesign called Material 3 Expressive.
Google Keep on Android Gets a Material 3 Expressive Makeover
Google Keep, the popular note-taking app, has received a fresh new look on Android, aligning with the Material 3 Expressive design language. The update, rolling out with Google Keep for Android version 5.25.282.00.90, brings a subtle yet modern refresh to the app.
The redesign focuses on cleaner, chunkier elements with rounded shapes. One of the most noticeable changes is the search bar, which has become chunkier, taller but narrower, and is now positioned between the profile switcher and the hamburger menu. The placeholder text has been simplified from "Search your notes" to just "Search Keep."
The toolbar icons have grown larger and now feature rounded backgrounds. The icons for the pin, reminder, and archive buttons, located at the top-right corner in rounded squares, have been optimized for clarity and accessibility. Meanwhile, the bottom row buttons for 'plus,' color/background, and text formatting are circular.
Another significant change is in the floating action button (FAB) menu, which now shows icons first before displaying text labels. This change improves the menu's accessibility.
The redesign also includes a new M3 Expressive search app bar component and a thicker field in the new app bar, along with an external hamburger button and a profile switcher. Inside notes, all buttons are now placed in containers, and image previews have gained side margins and rounded corners.
Rounded corners are a consistent theme throughout the app, contributing to a softer, modern aesthetic that matches Material 3 Expressive guidelines. However, the Google Keep Apple Watch app is no longer available.
The redesign is being rolled out gradually, and it's not yet widely available. The migration of Google Tasks-Keep reminders is scheduled for later in 2025. The web app version of Google Keep is finally rolling out text formatting, bringing it in line with its mobile counterparts.
This server-side update is part of Google's broader trend of core apps adopting Material 3 Expressive visuals, following in the footsteps of apps like Gmail and Google Wallet. The updated Google Keep for Android offers a fresher, more modern user experience, making it easier and more enjoyable for users to manage their notes.
The update to Google Keep for Android, adhering to the Material 3 Expressive design language, includes a refreshed look for all gadgets, enhancing the aesthetics of smartphones. The toolbar icons have been optimized for clarity, making it more accessible on modern technology devices such as smartphones.
