Ford Bronco New Energy: A Potential Future Arrival in India?
Ford has unveiled the Bronco New Energy, an all-electric and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), targeting the Chinese market first. While an Indian launch hasn't been confirmed, the potential for the Bronco New Energy to grace Indian roads remains cautiously optimistic.
The Bronco New Energy is a brand-new vehicle, distinct from the petrol-powered Bronco or Bronco Sport. It boasts a combined output of 311 horsepower and a top speed of 170 kmph. One of the heaviest vehicles in its class, it weighs 2,630kg, but the hybrid variant is slightly lighter at 2,510kg.
The extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain suits Indian roads, where EV charging infrastructure is still developing. This practicality, combined with the vehicle's advanced features like lidar sensors for driver assistance, all-wheel drive (AWD) capability, and off-road modes, aligns well with Indian consumer trends.
The all-electric variant of the Bronco New Energy will have dual motors, one at each axle. The front motor produces 177 bhp, while the rear motor offers 275 bhp. The hybrid variant, on the other hand, uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine only as a range extender, not driving the wheels. It includes a 177hp front motor, paired with a 245hp rear motor, and a 43.7kWh battery capable of covering 220km on electric power alone.
Ford will also offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Bronco New Energy using EREV technology. It draws power from a 105.4kWh LFP blade battery sourced from BYD. When combined with the petrol generator, the total driving range of the hybrid variant reaches an impressive 1,220km.
Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki is also working on a plug-in hybrid vehicle, indicating a growing trend in the Indian automotive industry.
While no official statements have been made about the Bronco New Energy's availability in other markets, including India, the technology and product direction suggest Ford might consider India as a future market once demand and infrastructure better support such vehicles.
