China Showcases High-Speed Rail Advancements at Global Congress
Beijing, July 8, 2025 — The 12th World Congress on High-Speed Rail took place in Beijing, the capital of China, from July 8 to 11, 2025. This significant event brought together over 2,000 participants from more than 60 countries and international organizations, reflecting its importance in fostering international cooperation and sharing expertise in high-speed rail technology and infrastructure.
The main topic of the congress was China’s rapid development in high-speed rail and its expanding global influence. Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, addressed the opening ceremony, highlighting China's achievements in this field.
Zhang Guoqing spoke about the world's largest and most advanced high-speed rail system, which spans about 48,000 kilometers and connects nearly every city with a population over 500,000. This network was described as a "vital toolkit" for national cohesion, economic growth, and regional development.
Key points discussed at the congress included China's high-speed rail expansion as a model for other countries, technological innovation and sustainability in high-speed rail, global partnership and collaboration opportunities, and pushing operational speed frontiers. Industry leaders and companies such as Alstom presented on topics like train design, maintenance plans, and environmental sustainability.
The congress also emphasised China's Belt and Road Initiative, opening new doors for international joint ventures and third-party market development, as exemplified by collaborations with Japanese firm Hitachi. Discussions around achieving speeds of 400 km/h and associated technological advancements marked a new milestone in high-speed rail operation.
