Global Businesses Gain Access to Tanzania's Vast $80 Billion Mobile Money Services Market Through Expansion by Unlimit

In a strategic move to serve Tanzania's evolving digital economy, Unlimit has integrated key mobile money services, including M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas, and Airtel Money, covering nearly 90% of the Tanzanian mobile money market. This integration aims to simplify transactions, minimize customer churn, and create a smoother and more inclusive payment experience.

Tanzania is rapidly emerging as a regional digital payments hub, with mobile payments being the key to financial access in the country. The annual transaction value of its mobile money market exceeds 80 billion USD, making it a significant player in Africa's digital economy.

The integration positions Unlimit to serve a vast customer base of over 121.5 million users across M-Pesa's 60 million, Mixx by Yas' 20 million, and Airtel Money's 41.5 million users. This move is expected to enable access to a comprehensive suite of national, regional, and global payment methods for businesses.

M-Pesa, the leading mobile money service in Tanzania, remains dominant despite gradual market share losses in neighboring Kenya. Other players like MTN's MoMo also operate in Tanzania, contributing to the overall mobile money landscape. As of January 2024, about 44.6% of the population aged 15 years and older had a mobile money account, indicating a growing trend in mobile money adoption.

The increasing adoption of mobile money services indicates a shift towards digital transactions in Tanzania. This can facilitate easier and more efficient financial transactions, especially for those without access to traditional banking services. The growth of mobile money services also supports cross-border payments, which are critical for economic integration in Africa. Digital remittances have doubled since 2020, with Africa playing a significant role in this trend.

As M-Pesa faces competition, innovations such as fee refunds and partnerships by competitors like Airtel Money could push the market towards more consumer-friendly services, potentially enhancing digital transaction efficiency and affordability.

Following its successful launch in Q2 2024, Unlimit has expanded its services in Tanzania, offering local and international cards, such as Visa and Mastercard, as well as USSD payments and bank transfers through all regional banks. Unlimit has also received a Bank of Tanzania license and opened a regional office in the country.

The shift towards digital payments in Tanzania is significant, as it is a key factor in financial access in the country's evolving digital economy. Unlimit's commitment to supporting merchants with a wide range of payment options across Africa is underscored by this integration, which will enable businesses to reach more mobile-first customers.

Unlimit's new integration of major mobile money services, including M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas, and Airtel Money, positions the company to serve a significant portion of Tanzania's digital economy, given the country's rapid emergence as a regional digital payments hub. With this move, Unlimit aims to offer businesses access to a diverse array of national, regional, and global payment methods, thereby facilitating easier financial transactions and promoting digital inclusivity.

The growth in mobile money adoption in Tanzania, as reported by sources like Reuters and GSMA ([1][2]), signifies a shift towards digital transactions, particularly for those without traditional banking services. This trend supports cross-border payments, a crucial factor in Africa's economic integration, and has contributed to the doubling of digital remittances since 2020 ([3][4]). As competition in the mobile money sector intensifies, innovations like fee refunds and partnerships could enhance digital transaction efficiency and affordability.
