Giessen's Digital Revolution: Fiber Optic Network Expansion to Boost Speeds
Giessen is set to undergo a significant digital transformation with the expansion of its fiber optic network. The project, scheduled for completion by December 2026, will see over 70 kilometers of fiber optic cable laid directly to homes and the installation of 71 new network nodes. This will enable significantly higher internet speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second, benefiting both residents and businesses.
The expansion aims to cater to the increasing number of internet-enabled devices in households and businesses. On average, a Giessen household has more than ten such devices. Fiber optic cables offer numerous advantages over copper cables, including higher transmission rates, stability, robustness, energy efficiency, and increased property value.
Mayor Frank-Tilo Becher has emphasized the importance of this project for Giessen's economic development and attractiveness as a place to live. Oliver Knoll, Regional Manager of Telekom, has stated that customers receive the home connection free of charge when they book a fiber optic tariff. However, those who hesitate may face new construction sites and connection fees later on. The project, initiated in early August 2023, is expected to provide access to Telekom's fiber optic network for 13,600 households and businesses upon completion. Tenants need to book a tariff, while homeowners and property managers need to provide consent for the house connection.
The fiber optic expansion in Giessen is set to revolutionize the city's digital landscape, providing high-speed internet access to a significant portion of its population. This project, led by Telekom, is not only beneficial for residents but also crucial for the city's economic growth and development.
