German defense company head advocates for increased pace in the joint Franco-German tank development endeavor
The Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) project, a joint initiative between France and Germany to replace the Leopard 2 and Leclerc main battle tanks, is progressing steadily in its industrial and organisational setup phase.
In January 2025, a shareholder agreement for the "MGCS Project Company GmbH" was signed by the main industrial partners KNDS Deutschland, KNDS France, Rheinmetall Landsysteme, and Thales. This company, based in Cologne, Germany, is equally owned by these parties with a national workshare split 50% Germany and 50% France.
This agreement follows a Letter of Intent signed by the French and German governments in spring 2024 and marks a significant step towards formalising the project company's role as the prime industrial contractor responsible for concept consolidation and technological development for MGCS.
The MGCS is planned to serve as the next-generation combat system, with an anticipated operational date around 2040. This means the replacement of Leopard 2 tanks with the MGCS is anticipated to occur around or after this year. This 2040 horizon indicates that the program remains in its early phases of development and industrial organisation, with further design, prototyping, testing, and production expected over the next 15 years.
The MGCS project features several key components, including a modern drone protection system, an unmanned turret, and a stronger main armament. The project also involves a modular system with an identical vehicle hull.
During a recent visit by Defense Ministers Boris Pistorius and Sébastien Lecornu, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger called for a faster pace in the German-French tank project MGCS. He expressed satisfaction with the actions of the German Chancellor and expressed confidence that this will not be the last visit from the French Defense Minister. Papperger also stated that he wants to speed up the MGCS together with partners.
Lecornu showed particular interest in new technologies such as connectivity and autonomous driving, which are integral to the MGCS project. The production concept development for the MGCS project is to occur in the coming months.
However, as of mid-2025, no further recent contract awards or prototype deployment milestones have been identified, indicating that the program is still in a foundational phase rather than advanced testing or production.
In summary, the MGCS project is a strategic Franco-German collaboration advancing gradually from concept consolidation toward full system development, with production and fielding expected in the late 2030s to meet the 2040 replacement goal.
- Despite the steady progress of the MGCS project, I'm not going to do it prematurely, as the production and fielding are expected in the late 2030s to meet the 2040 replacement goal.
- The MGCS project, with its focus on cutting-edge technologies like connectivity and autonomous driving, presents an opportunity for advanced technological development, but I'm not going to rush the process due to its early phase of development.
