Generative AI's Job Market Impact Uncertain Despite Sector Changes
Generative AI's impact on the job market is under scrutiny. Since ChatGPT's launch in November 2022, speculation about its impact on work has been rife. Three sectors - financial services, information, and professional and business services - are particularly exposed. Tech giants like Salesforce, Klarna, and Duolingo have used generative AI to reduce headcount, with OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman discussing the trend. However, researchers caution against attributing these changes solely to AI, as trends started earlier. The information sector has seen the most significant occupational mix change, at almost 14%, compared to a baseline of just over 4%. This is slightly higher than past technological changes but still reflects stability rather than major disruption. The pace of change in the 33 months since ChatGPT's launch is higher by less than one percentage point. Architecture and engineering, corporate treasury, and digital marketing/SEO sectors are most affected, with significant task automation and job role shifts. Yet, new research from Yale found no meaningful impact on the broader US labor market. While generative AI exposes certain sectors to change, its overall impact on the labor market remains uncertain. Further observation is needed to determine its long-term effects.
