Feige Discusses Deadpool, Wolverine, Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man Matters
Revamped Chat: Marvel's Bold New Horizon with Deadpool & Wolverine
Hey there! You know, Deadpool & Wolverine is a blockbuster moment if Marvel boss Kevin Feige is talking about it. It's been a while since he openly discussed Marvel projects, but with this mega release, it's clear something big is happening for both Feige and the Marvel Universe.
Feige sat down with io9 to dish the lowdown on Deadpool & Wolverine, touching on its impact on the MCU, the way it weaves in Logan, and even teasing future projects, such as the next Tom Holland Spider-Man flick, Avengers 5 and 6, and the next live-action X-Men project. But that's not all; Feige is also a toy collector, so he shared his thoughts on his recent Legendary Lego figure.
Germain Lussier, io9 posed the question, "2017 saw Disney acquire Fox. In 2018, Deadpool 2 was out. Were you thinking, "We'll never get to use this guy," or "What can we do to use this guy?""
Feige replied, "I was thinking the same thing about the X-Men and the Fantastic Four – that we'd never be able to use them. Yeah. Because that was before the sale, right?"
Lussier: "The sale happened in 2017 and finalized a bit later, but I figured maybe around that time you started thinking about it."
Feige: "I don't... no, I don't think so. We were in the midst of trying to finish Infinity War and Endgame. So maybe we knew the characters might be coming our way sometime, but until something's actually in our hands, we don't consider it real."
Lussier: "Fair enough. With Deadpool & Wolverine, it deals with its links to Logan early on. Are these links how it always played out, or were there other versions of its incorporation?"
Feige: "How it was going to incorporate Logan itself?"
Lussier: "Yeah, the events of Logan. There were a lot of incarnations of the movie, but we didn't want to undo anything of that movie, Logan. We didn't want to erase it or besmirch the honor of that great feature. So what you see in the movie was always the idea of how to navigate that."
With Comic-Con on the horizon, Lussier queried, "How much has Marvel's plan for Phase Five changed since the announcement of Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars in 2022?"
Feige: "I think it's safe to say it's changed. And I look forward to sort of clarifying that with people."
Lussier: "Interesting. Now, I know we'll probably learn more about the future of the MCU at Comic-Con, but can you say anything about the next Spider-Man?"
Feige: "Amy [Pascal] and I are working on it. We have writers who will be delivering a draft soon."
Lussier: "Great! Phase Four was about introducing new characters to the MCU. Will we see fewer of these characters in upcoming Avengers movies?"
Feige: "I don't speak in absolutes like that, but there won't be room for a hundred characters in an Avengers movie. Choices will have to be made. But that doesn't mean we won't see characters ever again."
Lussier: "I see you've got your own Lego minifigure." Feige holds up the figure "So, as a toy collector, what was this like? Any say in the accessories?"
Feige: "I don't remember if I had a say, but I was very honored. We had the entire Avengers Tower displayed in our office, and my figure was there, holding a shawarma and a hot dog. I wondered if I eat that much!"
Lussier: "Well, it's nice to know there's still room for a coffee."
Lussier: "Lastly, this movie sets up whatever we get to see with the X-Men. What can you tell us about future X-Men projects?"
Feige: "There's an embarrassment of riches in terms of great X-Men characters, and we'll likely see a mix of characters from the past and new faces. I think the success of X-Men '97 is exciting to us because it revisits the world and its soap opera elements."
Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26. Stay tuned for more Marvel news, including updates on Star Wars, Star Trek, the DC Universe, and Doctor Who.
