Fashion's Green Shift: Cactus Leather & Vegan Stars
The fashion industry is witnessing a significant shift towards sustainability and animal welfare. Designers are exploring innovative, eco-friendly materials like cactus, pineapple, and apple waste for leather alternatives. Meanwhile, improvements in animal welfare for materials like wool, down, silk, and furs are also on the rise.
German designer Lala Berlin has been at the forefront of this movement, focusing entirely on animal-friendly production since 2001. In 2023, the Berlin-based label released two handbags made from MIRUM®, a material derived from mushroom roots. This follows Stella McCartney's pioneering work in sustainable fashion, having grown up on an organic farm and used no animal materials since 2001. McCartney also presented handbags made from MIRUM® at her 2023 fashion shows.
Billie Eilish's influence in the fashion world is evident in her promotion of a vegan leather handbag for Gucci. This endorsement led Gucci to abandon real fur and introduce the 'Horsebit 1955' handbag featuring Demetra®, another vegan leather alternative. The singer's impact has been significant, making high-fashion vegan options more mainstream.
The fashion industry's focus on animal welfare and sustainability is growing, with designers like Lala Berlin and Stella McCartney leading the way. Innovative materials like MIRUM® and Demetra® are gaining traction, and celebrity endorsements, such as Billie Eilish's promotion of vegan leather, are driving this positive change.
