Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS Group) is considering using SpaceX's Starlink satellite network to enhance internet access on its trains. This potential move, part of FS Group's digital innovation and modernization efforts, could make Italy the first country in Europe to use Starlink on its rail system.
The testing of Starlink for train Wi-Fi is being reported by Railway Supply. The goal of the testing is to improve onboard internet access for passengers traveling across FS Group's rail system, including the flagship high-speed Rome-Milan route. The primary focus of the testing is on this busy rail line, one of the busiest in Europe.
Traditional cellular and terrestrial networks often struggle to provide uninterrupted service along the Rome-Milan route, particularly through tunnels and rural areas. Starlink's satellite-based infrastructure could offer a consistent and fast connection regardless of location on the rail network.
It's important to note that FS Group has not signed a commercial agreement with SpaceX for the use of Starlink. The initiative between the two parties is exploratory, with technical and feasibility assessments ongoing.
Scotrail, the railway operator in Scotland, is currently testing Starlink on some of its trains. This has provided reliable high-speed internet to customers and enabled real-time vehicle diagnostics and remote monitoring of track infrastructure. Brightline, a passenger rail service in the United States, was the first to add Starlink to its network in 2023.
If implemented, the use of Starlink could significantly enhance passenger connectivity on trains and in stations, particularly in areas with weak or inconsistent traditional mobile signals.
