Emergency Assistance at Fingertips: Life-Saving First Aid Via Mobile App in Munich
A groundbreaking project aimed at boosting cardiac arrest survival rates is underway in Munich: the "Munich Saves Lives" initiative. Trained volunteers can be alerted via an app to start life-saving measures before the arrival of emergency medical services.
The app alert system works by quickly notifying trained first responders about nearby emergencies, allowing them to administer CPR before the arrival of professional help. Reducing the time without treatment is crucial, as in Munich it usually takes around eight to nine minutes for emergency services to arrive on scene.
Initially, the project targets emergency services personnel and emergency doctors. However, medical personnel and trained laypeople will be incorporated into the project over time. To date, there are over 1,500 active volunteers, with nearly 1,200 successful deployments (as of March 19th, 2025). The average response time was 1 minute and 18 seconds.
To become involved, professionals working in emergency services or as emergency doctors can register for the initial phase. In the future, lay volunteers who wish to save lives in emergencies will also be recruited.

Trained volunteers, both professionals and laypeople, can register for the Munich Saves Lives initiative, aiming to incorporate more individuals interested in health-and-wellness and equipped with knowledge in science and technology. By administering CPR through and encouraged by this project, they can potentially save lives before professional help arrives.
