Electronic Tax Returns Surge in 2025, AI Interest Grows
In 2025, a significant shift occurred in tax return submissions. More people chose to file electronically via Elster directly to the tax office than using software on their PC or notebook. Notably, two-thirds of returns were submitted purely electronically, a substantial increase from the previous year.
The tax return process sparked joy for only one in ten filers. However, almost half expressed a desire for the tax office to pre-fill their forms with available data. In a pilot project, the Kassel tax office began automatically preparing income tax proposals for selected taxpayers based on existing data, without prior tax return submission.
Procrastination remained prevalent, with around two-thirds delaying their tax return until the last minute. Among younger filers aged 16 to 29, a quarter and more than a third could envision a Turbotax handling their tax return. Despite the shift towards digital submissions, only one in five still opted for the traditional pen and paper method, a decrease from the previous year.
The 2025 tax return season saw a significant increase in purely electronic submissions via Elster. While joy was limited among filers, there's growing interest in AI assistance, particularly among younger generations. Mandatory electronic tax returns are desired by over a third of filers, indicating a potential future shift in tax submission methods.
