Germany's Electric Vehicle Market Surges Ahead

In a significant shift towards electrification, Germany's electric vehicle (EV) market has experienced remarkable growth in the first half of 2025. According to recent reports, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 18.4% of new car registrations in July, marking a continued upward trend.

The month of July saw a substantial increase in new BEV registrations, with a impressive 58% jump compared to previous periods, reaching 48,614 units. This growth is reflected in the production figures, with Germany producing a record 635,000 BEVs and 229,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the first six months of 2025. Together, electric vehicles (both BEVs and PHEVs) made up 40% of all passenger cars produced domestically in that period.

The surge in EV registrations has placed Germany's EV market share at a substantial level. BEVs, in particular, represent nearly one-fifth of new registrations, while combined BEV + PHEV production comprises 40% of all domestic passenger car production.

Among the top-selling BEVs in July, the Volkswagen ID.3 emerged as the best-seller with 2,907 units, closely followed by the ID.4/ID.5 in third place with 2,682 units. The ID.7 claimed the second spot as the second best-selling BEV with 2,765 units.

The EV market is not only growing in production but also in consumer adoption, bolstered by government incentives and EU emissions targets. However, monthly registrations in 2025 have not yet reached the record highs seen in previous peak years, partly due to changes in subsidy policies.

The market is also experiencing shifts among automakers. While Tesla's German sales collapsed significantly in July (-55.1%), other competitors like BYD are surging. BYD is now in 10th spot (with 2.3% share) in Germany, having already overtaken Tesla to become the best-selling BEV brand in both Spain and Italy in the first half of 2025.

The new Skoda Elroq has consolidated its position in the top three spots in Germany, and plugin EVs accounted for 28.6% of auto sales in the country in July, a year-on-year increase from 19.1%.

Despite the growth of EVs, petrol-only and diesel-only sales still account for 42.6% of auto sales in Germany, down from 52.1% in July 2024. The combined share of EVs has been ahead of petrol-only sales for the fifth consecutive month in 2025.

In conclusion, Germany's EV market share—including both BEVs and PHEVs—is substantial and growing rapidly, with BEVs representing nearly one-fifth of new registrations and combined BEV + PHEV production comprising 40% of all domestic passenger car production in early 2025. The market is witnessing a dynamic landscape with new players emerging and existing ones adapting to the shifting trends.
