ECB Selects Providers for Digital Euro Rollout
The European Central Bank (ECB) has chosen external providers to assist in the rollout of its planned digital euro. This follows a call for applications and an invitation to tender for specific technology solutions. The selected providers will offer services for five components and aspects of the central bank digital currency (CBDC).
The chosen providers are: Sapient GmbH & Tremend Software Consulting, Feedzai, Capgemini Deutschland, equensWorldline, and Senacor. The ECB has signed framework agreements with these providers, except for the offline solution segment where one provider, Giesecke+Devrient in partnership with Nexi and Capgemini, has been announced with another to follow.
The ECB's decision to issue the digital euro will depend on the adoption of the Digital Euro Regulation. The actual development of the digital euro components will be decided later, subject to the ECB Governing Council's decision on the project's next phase. Meanwhile, reports suggest the EU is considering accelerating the digital euro's launch, with potential targets being Ethereum and Solana blockchains.
The ECB's selection follows a thorough process, with providers chosen to support various aspects of the digital euro's rollout. The project's timeline and specific details will depend on regulatory approval and further decisions by the ECB Governing Council.
