Furry Friends Flying High: Thousands of Fawns Survive due to Drone Rescues in 2024
Agriculture Ministry Announces: Thousands of Deer Fawns Rescued Through Drone Usage in 2024 - Drones Save Over 200,000 Deer: State Agriculture Ministry Report
In a striking move forward for wildlife conservation, the Ministry of Agriculture upped the ante on fawn rescue operations in 2024. Originating in 2021 under the leadership of Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens), the purchase of drones for fawn rescue has been a standout success, with plans by new minister Alois Rainer (CSU) to keep the momentum going. In a matter of days, the funding allocated for this year shot up from 1.5 to a whopping 2.5 million euros, due to the immense interest generated by the initiative.
Moreover, over 350 applications for funding have been submitted this year—a number that threatens to deplete the funds available. To ensure every eligible applicant receives a fair shot, the funding has been bumped up.
"Sadly, young fawns often fall victim to the agonizing 'mower's death' during the first mowing season," explains Rainer. No stranger to the perilous plight of fawns, these young ones are most at risk given their predicament aligns with the initial mowing period of the year. Hidden deep in dense grass on agricultural land, their refuge makes them vulnerable to being mowed down by machinery. When danger approaches, these delicate creatures stay completely still, reducing their chances of being noticed.
Monitoring from above, supplemented with thermal imaging technology, has proven to be the most effective strategy for these fawn rescues. This method far outpaces traditional tactics like harassment and patrolling in terms of efficiency.
Local animal protection groups or hunting associations stand to benefit from this welcome financial boost, with a contribution of up to 60% of the purchasing costs, capped at 4,000 euros per drone. By 2024, a staggering 2,446 drones have received funding.

- In an effort to further support agriculture and wildlife conservation, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMELV) has announced an expansion of their drone aid program, increasing funding for the production of agricultural products, allowing for the purchase of more drones for local groups.
- As more agricultural communities embrace the use of technology, gadgets like drones equipped with thermal imaging technology have proven instrumental in the successful aid for the production of agricultural products, ensuring the survival of fawns hiding in dense grass prior to mowing.
