Digital revolution future-proofs Kenya's economy as Freight & Warehousing outlines ambitious venture plan
Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA) Unveils Strategic Plan for Digital Transformation
The Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA) has launched its Strategic Plan 2025-2030, marking a significant step towards modernizing and digitizing Kenya's logistics sector. The plan aims to solidify Kenya's position as the gateway of choice for continental trade.
The launch event, held in July 2025, was attended by key figures from the logistics sector, including KIFWA's National Chairman Mr. Fredrick Aloo, Kenya Ports Authority CEO Captain William K. Ruto, Director General Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) Mr. Justus Omae Nyarandi, and FEAFFA Executive Director Mr. John Mathenge. Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, presided over the event, emphasizing the importance of the logistics sector in enabling the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The new strategic plan is centered around six key pillars, with a robust digital agenda being a central focus. The plan aims to integrate and digitize the entire freight and warehousing value chain in Kenya. It targets the modernization of customs clearing processes by digitizing documentation and procedures to shorten clearance times and shrink paperwork.
A significant aspect of the digital transformation is the adoption of a digital-centralized clearing and forwarding management system. This system is expected to reduce operational costs significantly across the freight sector in Kenya, enhancing the country's competitiveness in the regional East African logistics market. The digital overhaul is also expected to cut bureaucratic delays and enhance data sharing among logistics players, fostering efficiency and better regulatory compliance.
The plan also promotes the adoption of green warehousing practices to make logistics more sustainable and cost-effective. Moreover, it focuses on connecting diverse logistics stakeholders—including freight forwarders, cargo brokers, and transporters—through digital platforms to enhance collaboration and transparency.
The MICDE is actively supporting the digital transformation of the logistics sector under the "Digital Superhighway" initiative. This focus on developing Kenya's digital space aligns with the core objectives of the ministry. The launch of KIFWA's Strategic Plan signals strong government support for the digital transformation of Kenya's logistics sector.
Hon. Kabogo urged all sector players to foster collaborative efforts for user trust, regulatory compliance, and lowering trade costs. The KIFWA Strategic Plan 2025-2030 is a comprehensive roadmap aiming at leveraging digital technologies and sustainable practices to revolutionize Kenya’s freight and warehousing industry, reducing costs, improving speed, and facilitating regional trade integration.
Kenya's logistics sector is undergoing a significant transformation with technology as the central focus, as outlined in KIFWA's Strategic Plan 2025-2030. The plan intends to digitize the entire freight and warehousing value chain in Kenya, including customs clearing processes and adopting a digital-centralized clearing and forwarding management system.
